Introduction to Tapestry Weaving

Immerse yourself in a two-day weekend workshop at the ATW, designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of tapestry weaving. Working with the weft-faced French Gobelin technique, you’ll learn how to warp your own loom and weave simple shapes and lines, while exploring colour, pattern, and texture. A light afternoon tea will be provided.

This workshop is led by Senior ATW weaver Tim Gresham. Tim's tapestry practice spans more than 30 years and combines his deep interest in photography with a fascination for rhythmical pattern and colour. His work has been widely exhibited across Australia, including solo shows at Craft Victoria and Craft ACT, and major exhibitions such as the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award and the Cicely and Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award.

Tim’s current solo exhibition Perpetual, is on at Ararat Gallery TAMA until 15 February 2026.

MATERIALS: All materials are provided, including a custom wooden tapestry frame (60 x 40 cm), loom clamp, two handcrafted bobbins, cotton warp, needles, ten cones of ATW’s in-house dyed yarn (in colours of your choice), and our Learn to Weave booklet.

SKILL LEVEL: No experience necessary. Minimum age is 16 years.

Please note that all bookings are non-refundable. We appreciate your understanding.
